In 1997, Jessica Hicklin and Chris Santillan, both under the age of 18, were sentenced to life in prison without parole.
During their 25+ years of incarceration, they experienced a complete lack of formal education, which is the norm in America’s prisons, where 68% of inmates lack a high school diploma and 60% are functionally illiterate. Unsurprisingly, 83% of justice involved individuals return to prison within ten years.
